CSI: Thirty Absolutely Gruesome Murders
A Slideshow detailing the Top 30 gruesome murders on CSI. Anything from Seasons 8 and 9 will be in Spoiler tags, but nothing else, so beware - ***Possible Spoilers***
The obligatory disclaimer
"Gruesome", in this case, doesn't merely refer to those murders that involve a lot of blood, severed body parts or anything close to it (although we have loads of that, too). Some of the murders listed here have either surprising motivations, sinister methods, or just a very deep impact, as you'll see later on. Oh, and by the way, we might have missed something - it is, after all, quite tedious going through all nine seasons of CSI. Surely you're bound to disagree with the rankings or the crimes themselves; we've made it easy for you to sound off. Now, in chronological order, the thirty most gruesome murders as seen on CSI, starting from number 30...
#30 Woman drowned in a hotel bathroom
Episode 7.03 "Toe Tags"
Among the four crimes featured in this offbeat episode, one quite stood out - that of a woman named Donna Bassett, who was found dead inside an elevator, allegedly because of drowning. She worked as security for Hong Kong businessman Robert Hsing, who was having a streak of bad luck while gambling in Las Vegas. She decided to sneak in his hotel room and take a bath in his bathtub. He comes in, finds her, and, thinking she's causing his bad streak in baccarat, proceeds to drown her.
#29 Family brutally stabbed by daughter's boyfriend
Episode 1.07 "Blood Drops"
The entire Collins family was found brutally stabbed in their home - dad in a corridor, mom in her bed, two brothers in their room. But it's not the entire family, it turns out: teenage daughter Tina, and youngest daughter Brenda, survived the attack. Turns out, Tina was being sexually abused by her dad, which led to the birth of Brenda - and, when she found out that the younger survivor was also being abused, Tina had her boyfriend kill her dad, and the rest of the family for failing to protect them.
#28 Insane man under sedation killed by nurse
Episode 5.21 "Committed"
Robbie Garson was an inmate at an institution for the criminally insane. He died of asphyxiation right after he was brought into seclusion. While Grissom and Sara found it hard (and eventually dangerous) to question the other patients, the truth came out: he was killed by a nurse, Joanne McKay. She manipulated the victim into having a psychotic episode when another inmate, Adam Trent, refused her requests that he end his "relationship" with Robbie. She then sedated Robbie in seclusion, killed him, and had Adam cover up. Bigger catch? Nurse McKay is Robbie's mother. Even bigger catch? There wasn't enough evidence to tie her to the charge.
#27 Man killed, buried with head exposed
Episode 4.06 "Jackpot"
A head was sent to the lab, and it led Grissom to Jackpot, Nevada, where he eventually found a body buried with the head exposed and slashed to attract wolves. Turns out, it was Ross Jenson, who was having a relationship with Leland Brooks, the brother of the town sheriff, Alan. Everything was pieced together - the missing car, the sick dog which found the head - and, turns out, he was killed by Eric, Leland's son, who apparently did not approve of the relationship. He drugged the victim's coffee, buried him to his neck, slashed his face, and left there to be eaten by whatever.
#26 Missing women in groceries found dead
Episode 1.11 "I-15 Murders"
One woman was abducted while buying some groceries. Inside the shop's toilets was a message: "I've killed five women. Catch me if you can." The same thing happened in four other groceries, and all crime scenes were along the I-15. Turns out, the victims were strangled after being led out by suspects, a man who drives a refrigerated truck, and his girlfriend. Upon death, they are kept inside the truck for a pretty long time - until when, who knows? The first victim was later found tossed outside the street. The team later find the truck, arrest the suspects, and save the latest victim, Margaret Shorey, from a locked compartment inside the truck.
#25 Blue Paint Killer claims man's life
Episode 5.06 "What's Eating Gilbert Grissom?"
The Blue Paint Killer's been out for quite a while. The tactic's simple: apply a mixture of blue paint and motor oil to a railing near a fountain, get a female victim to touch the thing and try to rub off the paint, nab her, sketch her, rape her, strangle her, and dump her. The killer turned out to be Cody Lewis, an art professor who was successful in getting the police off the path by framing his accomplice. When that guy was killed, he got back to business. What makes this instance gruesome? The only deviation was the death of Jonathan Avery Haywood III; the killer had eye surgery and mistook the victim for the original target, and upon realizing that he's wrong, he disposed of the body through a wood chipper.
#24 High school student found buried in football field
Episode 6.18 "The Unusual Suspect"
High schooler Stacy Vollmer was killed in a fairly unusual manner: she was blinded when the shower she was in was sabotaged with some chemical, and was fatally hit in the head before being buried in the school's football field. Nobody could tell if she fell from the stairs, or was pushed, but all fingers point at Marlon West, for sabotaging the shower and starting everything in the first place. Catch is, he got away with it, even if he already admitted to the murder - thanks to his younger sister, child genius Hannah, who threw the entire case off with a similar confession.
#23 Mob boss returns from dead, kills former colleagues
Episode 7.09 "Living Legend"
Years ago, mob boss Mickey Dunn disappeared. Fast forward to the present: his Cadillac was found, and a string of murders occur between his former colleagues, thanks to an old photo of the victims with the mob boss being left at each crime scene. The murderer used names of killers from famous horror movies. Turns out, the murderer was Dunn himself; years ago he was robbed by the very same colleagues he killed, and was left for dead. His murders were, of course, for revenge.
#22 Missing high school cager found dead
Episode 7.17 "Fallen Idols"
Now, this is pretty complicated: high school basketball star Ryan Lansco, and his girlfriend, cheerleader Megan Cooper, disappeared. Turns out Ryan is dead: a student who's in love with Megan, and another student who once slept with Ryan, conspired to kidnap the boy and make him publicly admit that he has crabs. Things went wrong and, when he gave chase, he was pushed to a tackle dummy and died of blood loss - by Megan herself. She'd later go on to kill Diane, a photography teacher who had an affair with Ryan, when she hit her with a car after learning of Ryan's death.
#21 Sports better's face blasted off
Episode 5.16 "Big Middle"
In the middle of the woods lay a dead man's body, with a gunshot wound to the chest, and the face literally blasted off. The victim was sports better Kelvin Russell, who wasn't exactly liked by his colleagues, and hasn’t turned up to work in two weeks. The killer? Former boxer Cesar Dabo, who followed the victim upon orders from his boss. When he found out that Kelvin was cheating off a colleague, he just shot him dead, and left him there.
#20 Missing woman's body found under home
Episode 1.06 "Who Are You?"
A skeleton was found inside the foundations of a house, and was later traced to Faye Green, a woman who's been missing for the past five years. With sand in her ears and a fracture in her ribs, the investigation led to her then boyfriend, Jason Hendler. Initially the team thought the two fought with fatal consequences, but the trail later led to his current wife, Amy Hendler. She hit Faye with his rock climbing axe and pushed her to his aquarium, believing Jason was falling for her. Turns out, he was.
#19 Young boy beaten to death
Episode 5.17 "Compulsion"
Ty Hawkins, aged 12, was badly beaten to death in his bed, blood splattered all around the room. The initial suspects were his father, Martin, and his brother, Matt, just as the team find the pipe that was used as a murder weapon - and Martin's bloody sweater. Turns out, it was Matt who hit Ty in the head, wearing the sweater to get him off the trail. The reason? Ty's been telling everyone that Martin wets his own bed, at age 14.
#18 Russian woman found buried in tar
Episode 5.13 "Nesting Dolls"
This case got Sara sooo emotionally attached that she was suspended for a week. Two bodies were found, buried in tar, under a housing project. One of the bodies was traced to Svetlana Melton, a Russian who went to Las Vegas as a mail order bride. At one point, it seemed that her former husband, Andrew, was abusing her. Turns out, Andrew didn't want his wife out of the house, freaking out by the way other men looked at him. She faked the beating; he ended up killing her in a rage, and had a friend at a local salon (who owned the tar) bury her. As for the other body? It's of someone who tried to sneak into the country and died during the trip.
#17 Man beats another to death, calmly walks off
Episode 4.18 "Bad to the Bone"
The murder itself isn't gruesome, but the murderer is. Walter Darian beat another man to death in a casino garage. He then walked into the casino with his bloody hands, cleaned up inside the bathroom, and ordered a meal in the coffee shop, with an unusual calmness and regard for possible witnesses. The story went on quite complicatedly - something about his son, his sister and a fake murdered waitress - but, to keep things short, he has a very short temper and a tendency to murder. He even attacked Grissom during the investigation. He ended up dead.
#16 Missing woman found in suspect's chimney
Episode 6.16 "Up In Smoke"
A body turns up in the fireplace of Martin Sidley's home, and to his horror, it's his son Tad. But it goes beyond that: the home was a crime scene, albeit one that wasn't inspected, for the disappearance of Caroline Fitzgibbons the year before. The team takes a chance, digs up the chimney, and finds the woman's remains inside - she was apparently raped and stabbed before being bricked in. To make things more complicated, Tad is alive. Turns out, Caroline's dad, Don, suspected Martin had a hand in his daughter's disappearance, so he tried to contact Tad, snatched his gym card, took a previously dead body, and burned the ID with it. His aim? Get his daughter buried, and get a criminal in jail. Martin was caught red-handed.
#15 Dentist linked to Jane Doe murders
Episode 7.12 "Sweet Jane"
Veronica Sorensen was found dead, naked, cleaned, and with signs of sexual trauma. The team thought the killer killed before, and they were right. Shoddy police work and a lack of technology prevented three other Jane Doe murders from being solved: the 1975 victim was clothed, the 1989 victim wasn't cleaned, the 1999 victim was doused in water, and Veronica was cleaned with alcohol. All victims had dental work with David Lowry, who was later tagged to the crime after a bite mark in the 1989 victim matched with his teeth before he had corrective surgery. But he's a old guy, so he willingly submits to the police, and doesn't reveal the identities of the others.
#12 Restaurant chef's body ground up
Episode 3.11 "Recipe for Murder"
A meat grinder turns up to have ground not just beef or pork, but human. Restaurant chef Petrov Davidoff has gone missing for two weeks, and a peek at his restaurant's kitchen yields everything else but the cooking going on. Oh, and Petrov had the habit of making out with everybody, so when he was spotted getting it on with another chef, the restaurant's (female) receptionist stabbed him once in the back, killing him. The sous chef and the restaurant owner helped by slicing up the dead body and sending it to the meat grinder.
#11 Cop killed in pursuit of Miniature Killer
Episode 7.16 "Monster in the Box"
Natalie Davis, known as the Miniature Killer, is possibly one of the most sinister serial killers in the show. She killed throughout the seventh season, and made very precise miniatures that were either left on the scene, or sent to LVPD. There's bleach, there's the past, and there's her attempt to kill Sara - but the most sinister of her murders perhaps involved her attempt to kill Barbara Tallman. With advance knowledge of where she'll strike next, the team had an undercover cop pose as the original victim, waiting for Natalie to come out and attempt the murder. However, she was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, thanks to some complicated contraption in the chimney.
#10 Female jail inmate found tied under bus
Episode 4.17 "XX"
An arm suddenly springs out from under a bus, which leads to the discovery of the dead body of "Baby Girl", an inmate in a female prison, tied under the vehicle. Turns out she's pregnant, and the driver of the bus was the father of the kid. But a wound to the head led the team to Juanita, the victim's former cellmate. The two had a relationship, and when Baby Girl was transferred to a new cell, she thought she was being rejected, because she found out about the pregnancy. The victim died through a "lock in a sock" - basically a padlock inside a sock used as a weapon. The bittersweet moment? Baby Girl was being transferred because she was caught smuggling a necklace, meant for Juanita.
#9 Woman killed by anti-alien club
Episode 7.22 "Leapin' Lizards"
Blackjack dealer Chyna de Vere has gone missing, and the investigation led them to pig farmer Hank Connors, who proceeded to shoot himself rather than be apprehended by the police. After finding the victim's head hanging on his wall, the investigation led to a club that strongly believed reptilian aliens are out to take over. Chyna's husband Preston - along with a common friend, Shannon Turner - thought she was one of those reptilians. Shannon shot her dead, Hank did the slicing, Preston cleaned the crime scene, and another friend gave an alibi, supposing the husband was abducted by aliens.
#8 "Werewolf" shot dead with silver bullet
Episode 6.11 "Werewolves"
Hayden Bradford suffered from a medical condition that rendered him with more body hair than usual, thus the name "human werewolf syndrome." He was killed because of this - a single (silver) bullet wound to the chest. The killer was his friend, Brent Moyer; distraught after finding out that Hayden is engaged to his sister, and more so after discovering that the condition can be passed down to their offspring, he decided to stop the marriage once and for all.
#7 Woman's head found wrapped in newspaper
Episode 5.12 "Snakes"
Journalist Veronica Juarez was in Mexico to investigate bands performing narcocorridos - "drug ballads", or songs that depict real events - and its impact in culture. In the end, she died because of another person's pursuit of fame: her head was found wrapped in a newspaper. The team later find that bartender Juanito Concha ran her over with his truck, and chopped her head off, wanting to impress the rowdy Sinaloan cowboys - folks who are fans of narcocorridos - and, ultimately, get one composed about him.
#6 Woman found crucified to cross
Episode 7.05 "Double-Cross"
Charlotte Danville was found dead inside a church, crucified to a cross. She didn't die because of that, though; it was a blow to the head that got her in the end. The investigation led to her boyfriend, Cody White, who later confessed to the killing. His girlfriend is cheating on him - to be exact, to his friend Frank Berlin, who is a priest. He was further incensed upon learning that Frank will leave priesthood just to be with her. Charlotte died pregnant - with Cody's child.
#4 Vegas showgirls brutally killed in own home
Episode 7.18 "Empty Eyes"
Six showgirls were killed in what is perhaps one of the most haunting CSI episodes ever. One of them was stabbed to death after being raped; the other five were bound before having their throats slashed. One of them died in front of Sara, and the victim's efforts to lead them to the killer - a wine-shaped birthmark - led them to Marlon Frost, who followed one of the victims home, threatened the rest with a fake gun, and did his gruesome deed. He almost got away with it, though; he attempted to commit suicide by slashing his own throat.
#3 Doctor, girlfriend killed in jealous rage
Episode 4.12 "Butterflied"
Nurse Debbie Marlin (who looks a lot like Sara) was preparing for a romantic night in, but it didn't happen - she was found dead in her bathroom, positioned in a way that calls attention to it. There's a lot of (cleaned) blood around her, though - too much - and when the team finds bags of human flesh in a nearby bin, they find out another person was murdered: her boyfriend, Michael Clark. The suspect was Vincent Lurie, Debbie's former squeeze. Jealous before she split up with him, he decided to kill her and positioned her so Michael would come into her home (for that night in) and be surprised. He then killed him, and meticulously dissected him. Even worse, there's no evidence to incriminate him.

#14 Bank teller jumps to death in a bikini
Episode 9.02 "The Happy Place"
Sprig Grenigier decided to don her swimsuit and jump to the beach - or, actually, jump off her house's balcony, which means she hit a bus and died. Suicide? Rather, how can you kill without being there? The victim was a former bank teller, who was fired after giving more money than expected to a customer. She eventually figured out that she was being scammed herself, by her hypnotist, Viviana Conway, who disguised herself and hypnotized her at the bank. Shortly after, the suspect called the victim and hypnotized her - to her death.

#13 CSI member shot at close range
Episode 8.17 "For Gedda"

Undersheriff McKeen, who's been a target of suspicion, wouldn't let him get him - and proceeds to shoot him twice at close range. The following season, he was almost killed by Nick (and "missed"), and arrested.

#5 Dead bodies as life-like art installations
Episode 9.03 "Art Imitates Life"
One bizarre crime scene led to another. A dead woman leaned against a post, a dead jogger on a beach, a dead homeless man dressed as a businessman calling for a cab, a pair of dead elderly people posed as bird watchers. A dig through the art community led them to Arthur Blisterman, a frustrated artist whose proposal for statues depicting Las Vegas life was struck down by the city. His sketches were very similar to the first four finds - and a fifth had a kid in a bicycle. The tactic was, he'll kidnap the victims, drug them, pose them to his liking, gas them, and "install" them across the city. The kid was rescued, barely. Blisterman wanted to leave a legacy, and argued that the victims were nobodies until he worked on them.

#2 Philanthropist thrown to the dogs
Episode 8.10 "Lying Down With Dogs"
Elizabeth Rodriguez just took an award for her philanthropic work, and the next thing we know, she's found dead, riddled with dog bites. There's more to her charity, though; she was also a prominent dog fighter, and a pretty dirty player, though. Tommy Halpert was trying to bust a dog-fighting ring for the DA, and after finding out about Elizabeth's involvement - and the horrors of animal fighting - he euthanized her and literally threw her to the dogs.

#1 Dick and Jane Killer claims tenth couple
Episode 9.09 "19 Down"
Nathan Haskell arguably craves for attention. He is, after all, the Dick and Jane Killer, notorious for nabbing couples, killing the men and keeping the women's location secret. After killing eight couples - each succeeding male victim found had one more stab wound than the previous one - he was caught, and has become more than willing to let people peer into his mind: giving his victims desperation, then hope, then death. The murders mysteriously resurfaced, thanks to his accomplices, but they arrest the new DJK and saved a new female victim. And found the other nine female bodies. And Grissom was gone.
