CSI: Previewing Episode 9.21 "If I Had A Hammer..."
Astro Quesssssssst!
So last week's CSI finally trained the spotlights on two lab techs who should be creeping out by now: Hodges (Wallace Langham) and Wendy (Liz Vassey), and their apparently shared love for Astro Quest, that sci-fi series which obviously references Star Trek, with one character having droopy ears rather than pointy ones. (Spock!) For sci-fi fans--I'm not one of them, I'll admit--this episode was probably a treat, complete with Battlestar Galactica's Kate Vernon showing up as a teacher who turns out to have killed--by accident?--the victim. For me, it's funny for those weird daydreams Hodges has.
I mean, '60s sounds? I'm definitely wrong in presuming it's the synthesizer, but that, and the outfits, and the surprising tie-in to the lab ("I have a sworn duty to this lab," Hodges goes) was making me laugh out loud, even if I know I shouldn't. But here goes the exposition: Wallace and Wendy, sitting on the commander's seat... something like that?
What I liked about the episode is the way they played with Hodges' yet unrequited and unaddressed feelings for Wendy. So this guy, who doesn't like field work and seems to be more similar to Gregory House than Gil Grissom, has a soft side, and a very sci-fi one. And Wendy, who's still busy at work--or so it seems--might have something for him, too. But things break apart, or they don't, and they actually don't. "We were made for each other," Hodges blurts out in whatever language they equate to Klingon.
I guess what sucked about that episode is that it hit too close to home. The major difference is, Hodges said something, and I didn't.
With rumors that Wendy will ultimately pursue a position on the CSI team, I'm expecting that this story will be played with a lot more, now that GSR has all but disappeared. Time to think of a good acronym, CSI fans. I can't think of a witty one.
Before that, though, there's tonight's episode of CSI, starring E.T. star Henry Thomas--yup, the kid who played Elliott--as Jeremy Kent, the primary suspect in Catherine's (Marg Helgenberger) first ever case. She got him locked up, all right, but many years later, he wants a retrial, and he wants the evidence looked at with fresh eyes--and enw technology. The storyline may seem similar, but the dynamics have definitely changed. That's tonight from 9pm on CBS. You've seen the photos? Sure, they're right below.
